Canada is a world leader in sustainable fisheries management.

Sustainable fisheries means the harvesting of fish stocks in a manner that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Conservation measures include:

  • a limited number of licences issued, with limits on the number of traps;
  • limited and staggered fishing seasons
  • protection of egg-bearing females
  • minimum lobster size limits
  • maximum lobster size limits
  • and ongoing monitoring and enforcement of fishing regulations and licence conditions.
